On a mission to create a better world for animals...
We are an animal sanctuary dedicated to providing forever homes to animals in need. We are committed to creating a better world for all animals through inspiration and education about animals, the problems surrounding animal exploitation, and the power that people have as individuals to be part of the solution.
The Open Barn became a 501c3 nonprofit organization in 2020 after settling on over 8 acres nestled among the vineyards in Ramona, CA.
Why Rescue Animals?
The inspiration to start an animal sanctuary came after realizing how practical, easy, healthy, and fulfilling a life without eating or using animals can be! After going vegan in 2018, it felt like I had uncovered this big secret that the world needed to know. Why would anyone cause harm to an animal if they didn't have to? And why is it that people view and treat some animal species (like dogs and cats) so differently than others (like cows, chickens, pigs)?

The reality is that culture, habits, and traditions are very powerful influencers. When we've been doing something for a long time, we often keep doing it without giving it a second thought. If you are like me, you probably grew up eating animals and not thinking twice about it. But after truly weighing the pros and cons, the decision to stop using animals became easy.

The message that we want people to receive is that it’s completely possible and in fact very practical to live a life without harming animals. Living a life without using animals is WORTH IT! Two very compelling reasons to do this are that: 1. all animals species are unique individuals with their own personalities and the ability to think, feel and experience a wide range of emotions just like us. And 2. the harm that exploited animals undergo as a result of seemingly trivial daily choices is severe. The pain and suffering they experience is unfathomable.
So we share the stories of our rescued animal residents to bring awareness to these two points. We give them the absolute best care and a loving forever home, and we create opportunities for people to see farm animals in a new light.
Wouldn’t we be living in a much more beautiful and peaceful world if all animal species were given moral consideration and respect? The power is entirely in our hands. Let’s create a better future for animals!
